Yesterday was Free Comic Book Day! I was set up at The Core in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Welcome to the new readers I met yesterday!
I was a really beautiful day outside. A lot of friends stopped by, and tons of people I’ve met this year at cons. This was actually my 6th comic event this year and the 3rd one in Cedar Falls.
I have been really trying to do as many in-person events as I can. I love getting out to shows and just talking to people about whatever nerd thing they are passionate about. Besides talking about comics, I can always count on talking about pro wrestling, obscure movies, and cartoons/anime.
The best part, as always, is meeting young people who are in love with comics. I know exactly what it feels like because I was once them. The theme of this year seems to be me meeting young folks who want to make comics. This has been amazing.
When I was 10 years old, I went into a comic shop to meet Phil Hester. I knew I wanted to make comics. I was already writing them, but I had no idea how to get them made. When I talked to Phil, he didn’t treat me like a kid. He treated me like a human, an equal, and that meant the world to me. It still does over 20 years later.
I try to do the same. When I’ve met these young kids who make art or want to make comics, I am happy to help. I answer any questions they have, tell them I want to see their work, and I give their parents my contact info, telling them to reach out if they have any questions or anything I can help with to reach out. I’ve been inviting them to sit with me behind the table and tell them I started out with my parents, bringing me to comic conventions, and now I’m here behind the table.
I’m not a big-name creator, but things like this mean the world to me.
Here is the cover to Hospice: The Collector. All the covers on the throne are real published comic covers. Some of them are mine, and the rest are from friends. We will have even more real covers inside the issue.
Check out some concept art for a new short comic with Matt Guise.
I also got comp copies of Archetypes #2 from Geek Collective. I wrote a 5-page story for this, written by me and drawn by Kurt Belcher.
I started training for that writing position this last week, but I’ll talk more about that soon. Until next week, don’t be a dick!
